This project is a creation that represents the culmination of multiple obligations of mine. I am going to be a radio DJ at KUGR radio on the Washington State University campus. The station will focus on alternative hip hop and rap and highlighting artists who are women of color especially. Much of my own music interest is in these artists and their unique perspectives that aren’t heard in the shuffle of mainstream media.
In this project, I used different elements to assemble the above poster for my show. It is somewhat preliminary and only has a few details, lacking social media and a few other things possibly. It is supposed to represent a few the 90’s themes that inspire me a lot. This show also represents a good opportunity to digitally document the journey I’m on as a DJ.
This first design assignment showed me that I have a lot more ideas than I would’ve thought and helped me realize how comfortable I am with Photoshop. After some light peer review and revisions, this is the new final version of my poster for the project. By selecting certain areas to work on, making use of brushes to darken, and adding layers to increase opacity, I was able to make the title and a section the text in the background more visible and easy to read.
‘Behind The Headlights’ was chosen as a title because I wanted to invoke a feeling of being behind the system and behind the music industry. One thing that I hope both my show and blog can represent is a deeper look into the media and information we hear about artists and creators all the time.
I wanted this particular project to incorporate practical purpose so that’s why I made a flier. I tried to edit it so you can clearly read the text without losing the creative aspects. The picture from the background was taken by my friend Dara of the KUGR studio and she sent it to me to use for this. I’ve also added faint text including quotes from a great feminist poet, Audre Lord, to add some dimension to the poster and add some emotional depth as well.
