This is the rough draft for my logo. I created this for my radio show on KUGR, and so it was important to me that the logo be reminiscent of other radio shows and really give the impression of a radio/tv show.
My radio show has a fairly long title, ‘Behind the Headlights’, which gave me a bit of trouble in designing a cohesive logo, so I ended up going with a bit of a 90’s aesthetic so that I could incorporate large block letter and use some different fonts to add some complexity to what would otherwise be a simple logo. Since I will actually use this for my show, I wanted the logo to be very personal, this is the sort of brand awareness I’d like to build going forward.
Some of my direct inspiration was the album cover of Kari Faux’s ‘Lost En Los Angeles’ album (great album, btw!). It has a very west coast indie vibe to it and that was one of the initial things I drew from. The other main inspiration was 90’s drive-ins and that sort of flashy, color-blocked look cause I thought it would read really well with the colors of my logo.
As I was creating this draft, I felt very comfortable using illustrator and creating design elements on the program. The main challenge I ran into putting the logo together was finding the right fonts that read strong enough but also gave off the right impression. The cursive font was especially hard, as most of the ones I found, even online, were very hard to read.
While the small text on the logo may be slightly hard to read further away, most radio logos aren’t viewed from afar so it can remain a bit more complex. Generally, the logo will be blown up larger onto shirts or a sticker so the vector graphics and text will translate well to larger size, as will the relatively simple logo design.
