Audio Story Draft

 

Above is the audio story that I created for the blog and my class. I am excited to present this because it is a compilation of some of the best moments and songs from my radio show, Behind The Headlights. All the audio was taken from recordings of my show on KUGR.org, which worked out well for this project because I already owned all of the audio.

I also included some music in the story, because my show is mainly music focused. For songs, I used only things I had actually played on the radio and kept the audio for each song under 15 seconds long so that it wouldn’t violate any copyright with the blog.  I wanted to translate the themes of my show into one cohesive story as well as possible here.

Hopefully any followers of the blog will enjoy getting to actually hear a bit of what the show stands for and my take on some of the issues that we get into. This is definitely a draft though, and I will be making a few changes to some of the background audio and music to make things sound a little more seamless.

Moving between talking and music became quite a struggle for me in terms of the design of this story. Clips of me talking always end pretty abruptly and I had some trouble fading down the music and getting it to come in right.

For this draft, I ended up lowering the volumes of the two separate music tracks I had. The first includes the actual songs with lyrics, and the second was a long looping instrumental from one of the songs on my show that is very subtle. It ended up just playing below me speaking as well as during the silence and transition, so as to color the dead space and make everything a bit more cohesive.

My main challenges in creating this audio story were getting the clips to match up and mesh cohesively. Because my actual show is 2 hours long, it was very annoying to constantly have to switch between very large and very small zoom on the multifile track, but that only hindered me in the way of frustration. The other challenge I had was editing down the audio to be under 2 minutes since I started with over 6 hours of music/talking audio to choose from.

In today’s political and social climate, many things are changing and being brought to the front. This blog was created for my COM210 class, at Washington State University in Pullman, WA, where I am a student. Mostly though, the blog is about showcasing talented artists and sharing their stories through my lens. My perspective is that of a white college student whose experiences learning and empathizing with the music and art of black and minority women have helped shape my path towards activism, education, and an overall a deeper responsibility to inform and give space for them to speak their piece. My perspective will be shown through how I choose artists and how I discuss them, but the purpose of this blog first and foremost is to highlight the dedication, sacrifice, and artistry of black women working and creating spaces for themselves in the very male-dominated music industry. While the discussion and sharing of a black woman’s perspective will always be political because of the world we live in, this blog is a safe space for anyone of any political alignment. My goal is to bring to light the talent and ideas of amazing women for the sake of appreciation for how their music has affected me, and the power of sharing unheard voices. I want Black Girl Magic to simply be a positive source of information and content at a time when the narrative is so often negative. For the purpose of identification, my name is Colin Finch, but this about me will be vague because I want to yield the space of my blog to the stories of these women. I am of course not perfect, but I will work hard to present this art meaningfully and informatively.   1. Hey Colin! First of all, this is such a cool topic and this short piece of your talk show is really interesting! I thought this was really great and I loved the instrumental music that was playing very lightly in the background. I believe you basically covered the parts where it needs a little work. Basically just getting the different clips of you talking to blend better! Maybe to fix that you could zoom in very closely on the parts you’re clipping and making sure you’re not clipping the end of the last word you say or the beginning of the first word that you say? Not sure if that helps, but it’s an idea! The only other thing is the music that comes in randomly, maybe try finding a place after one of your sections of talking that seems like music would fit well after! Overall, this is such a cool story!

  2. Hey! I think you did a really good job! I could imagine it must have been really stressful to pick out only a few minutes of talking out of 6 hours, but I think the stuff you choose was really good. I could understand what your topic is about. And I think all the music you added in the back went really well with the talking and it came on at good timing. The only advice would to be maybe making the music a little louder, especially at the end because it was very quiet. But overall it was great! Good work!
